Sull'Onda di S.Giuseppe

Sull'Onda di S.Giuseppe

San Giuseppe in Siena has always offered a delicious opportunity to explore the city in search of the most prized fritters. For those who dare to climb via Dupré that starts from the Campo, after a few meters, you can smell the sinful aroma of the excellent fritters prepared by the Contrada Capitana dell’Onda for all the citizens. Together with those sugary softnesses, a festive atmosphere is released for adults, the elderly and children made of hugs, laughter, simple and welcoming conviviality in which no one sits alone in a corner but young and old exchange greetings and cheerful laughter: and it is here, in my opinion, that one can grasp one of the many human facets that animate a Sienese contrada. If then, well fed with fritters, you continue the climb, passing the thirteenth-century Porta di Sant’Agata, today a simple arch, you arrive at the delightful Church of San Giuseppe dei Legnaioli which, to be honest, has nothing to do with fritters. A 16th-century structure with a central plan and an octagonal umbrella dome, it was commissioned by the guild of the Woodworkers; inside there is a sumptuous wooden gate from 1700, and a baroque Glory of Saint Joseph that in the splendor of shapes and colors exalts the grandeur of the saint. Below the church, the crypt entirely restored and today home to the contrada museum and a place of cultural and social aggregation.
